FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is one of the most common ways to transfer data from one computer to another on a network. When creating or updating a website, FTP allows you to move the files from your computer to the server where your site is hosted. There are many FTP programs available to download for free and others at a small cost. Four commonly used programs are listed below:

1. FileZilla – Is one of the most frequently used FTP programs available. It is an open-source, and therefore, free client for Windows, Mac and Linux. FileZilla is for users both novice and experienced due to its full range of features, reliability and speed.

2. WinSCP – Or Windows Secure Copy, is also an open-source and free FTP client specifically for Windows. The program is easy to use and fast while still containing robust features, such as an integrated text editor. WinSCP has an extensive help center and can support several languages.

3. SmartFTP – This client is customizable and supports drag and drop functions in the interface. There are more advanced features included with the ability to have multiple FTP connections at one time, resume incomplete downloads and passive transfers. SmartFTP is available for Windows only and has a license fee starting at $36.95.

4. Transmit – This client is for the Mac lovers. It is designed specifically for a Mac with many of the features users know and love. There is a dashboard widget, transfer progress tracker and drag and drop functionality. The system is known for the many added features and the speed of transfers. With the functionality also comes a cost – a Transmit license starts at $34.00.
